Don’t Define A Goal. Define What Will EXCITE YOU.

When I’m feeling discouraged or frazzled…not making headway on a goal, I typically try to find a book that will help me focus, motivate me, and light a fire under my ass.

They call it “personal develoment time” and I buy into it. Sometimes each morning before I start working.

It does help, too. It helps me get pumped for the day, and it brings forth much more productive work.

 

Well this morning, as I’m reading the 4 Hour Workweek, a book I highly recommend by the way…

Something he said about goals literally reached up and slapped me across the face.

DOING THE UNREALISTIC IS EASIER THAN DOING THE REALISTIC.

 

Wait, but that’s backward right?

 

I’ve always subscribed to SMART goals.

S – specific, significant, stretching

M – measurable, meaningful, motivational

A – agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented

R – realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented

T – time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable

 

Isn’t that the way we’re supposed to do it? 

Set the bar for our goal at a place where it’s definitely attainable? 

 

Not according to this book.

And it makes SO MUCH SENSE.

 

I always set goals in the middle, for fear of failing.

I don’t want to fail, I want to succeed.

So I set the goal where I know I can.

 

But consider this:

“The worst that can happen isn’t crashing and burning. It’s accepting terminal discontent as a tolerable status quo.”

Oh man.

So while I’ve been here, worried I’ll crash and burn, I’ve literally programmed myself to be ok with the middle.

I’VE NEVER BEEN OK WITH THE MIDDLE!!

 

Then I realized I might be teaching my clients to be ok with the middle also.

That’s when my thinking on goals came to a SCREECHING halt.

 

I will NOT be one of those trainers or coaches that accepts mediocrity.

 

Here’s the thing:

As a trainer, I want you to NAIL DOWN what the ONE thing is that would EXCITE you about your health and fitness if you achieved it.

The one thing that would CHANGE IT ALL.

It would redefine your life as you see it now.

 

What is that ONE thing?

THAT is what I want you to go for.

 

I don’t want you to go for what would be comfortable.

Or go for what would be “ok”.

I certainly don’t want you to be content!!!!

 

 

 

I WANT YOU TO BE EXCITED.

Sure it may be uncomfortable, even SCARY, to think about what you REALLY want. And then turn around and say you’re going to GO FOR IT.

But…remember.

 

“Success can be measured by the number of uncomfortable situations you’re willing to go through.”

 

So watch this video, see the ACTIONABLE steps that can help you get started. It breaks it down very simply actually.

What can you do now? Tomorrow? And the next day?

 

Go DO those things.

They are little 5 minute things.

But they are STEPS toward reaching that “goal”.

 

(All while making sure that your goal isn’t something that is just placed in the distant future. Out of sight, out of mind.)
