With cold and flu season upon us, and sick kids running around everywhere, I absolutely have to up my defenses. The fact of the matter is, with Cystic Fibrosis, if I catch the flu-it could leave me hospitalized. In fact the last time I was in the hospital was because of a one-two punch of the flu and pneumonia at the same time. *miserable*
And you guys know how much I try to keep everything natural. Well you better believe I have some natural defenses lined up for flu season.
Before I get into the tonic recipe, I want to mention here that my first line of defense is always adding Vitamin D to my immune system. Vitamin D is an amazingly effective antimicrobial agent, producing 200 to 300 different antimicrobial peptides in your body that kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. We can use 2000 IU’s of Vitamin D a day to defend against the flu and fly through the season without any issues. (It is 35 IU per pound of body weight.) So stock up on the vitamin, you’ll need it.
A GREAT concoction to boost your immune system, kill fungi and viruses, and to jam pack your body with antioxidants is this naturally powerful Flu Tonic. (I’m drinking a cup as we speak!) I used to get the flu shot, but somehow I still got the flu. They’d always say, oh well it must’ve been a different strand. I just didn’t see the point! So I dug around in my herbal remedies book and found a smashing combo of natural flu fighters, and so the Flu Tonic was born.
Here’s what all is in it:
Lemon: Lemons are alkalizing for the body! They are acidic to begin with but they are alkaline-forming when they come into contact with the fluids inside your digestive system, helping to restore balance to the body’s pH to alkaline. Bacteria and fungus cannot live in an alkaline state, so lemon’s ability to help alkalize your body is much needed! They are also rich in vitamin C and flavonoids that work against infections like the flu and colds.
Ginger: Ginger combats vomiting and nausea by soothing your gut, but that’s not all it’s good for. It has a warming effect that stimulates circulation and can help you to sweat out any viruses, but it also inhibits common colds and bacteria.
Turmeric: Turmeric is an impressive antioxidant. In it is a compound called curcumin that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties known to boost your immune system. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The curcumin in turmeric has been shown to prevent diabetes, lower the chance of heart attacks, and even prevent cancer!
Raw Honey: Honey, particularly in it’s raw form (and Manuka Honey is even better), is antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial. It is also great at soothing sore throats and cough and it even is great for healing wounds and burns!
Never underestimate the power of getting enough rest, drinking enough water, and reducing stress to boost your immune system. But if you want that extra push…here’s how to create my all natural flu remedy, the Flu Tonic. When cold and flu season comes around, scoop out two tablespoons of the mixture and stir it in a cup of hot water along with a few slices of lemon and ginger. Let steep for about 3-4 minutes and enjoy up to 3 times a day!
- 2 lemons
- 1 inch knob of ginger, peeled
- 1 tbsp turmeric
- 1 cup of raw honey
Slice up your lemons and ginger.
From there you’ll stack your lemon and ginger into a jar. (Mason jar is best for this!) Then toss in your turmeric and shake the jar to incorporate all the ingredients throughout.
The last thing to do is pour the honey over the ingredients, seal, and refrigerate.

Kids love it because it’s sweet, and you’ll be happy knowing that you are lining up every defense that you can against any colds and flu that might try to invade. I hope you enjoy and let me know in the comments how it goes!
