What are macros?
“Macros” is slang for Macronutrients – Protein, Fat, and Carbs. Macronutrients are what drive your body’s engine; they are your fuel.
A macro refers to either a Carbohydrate, Protein, or Fat molecule. Each one of these is broken down in your body and used for energy or to help your body function in some way. Each macro has a specific number of calories assigned to it, which is in simple terms, the amount of energy it gives your body.
1g of carbohydrates (carbs) = 4 cal
1g of protein = 4 cal
1g of fat = 9 cal
So IIFYM is about having a macro “budget” so to speak based on your calorie intake, meaning you have a set number of carbs, protein and fats you are allotted each day. Technically under this system you can eat whatever you want as long as it fits within that budget. Technicallllllly…..
Yes, I said WHATEVER YOU WANT. BUT here’s where quality comes in and why you shouldn’t just start eating pure junk under your macro plan.
Let’s be clear, if you avoid healthy foods you risk creating deficiencies and numerous health problems. I still hold to the 80/20 rule: 80% whole, real foods and 20% foods you feel are treats. This way you get to enjoy yourself while getting everything you need like fiber and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants) and still achieving results.
IIFYM SHOULD NOT be used as an excuse to binge on junk foods that have absolutely no nutritional value just because it fits your goal macro ratios. Your results will undoubtedly suffer as you lose out on the nutritional value of natural, whole foods. Basically what that means is yeah….you can eat donuts and candy to get to your carb and fat goal and if you hit your macro and calorie goal daily you WILL lose some weight…but will those donuts and candy get you that 6 pack? NO! Because they are completely void of the nutrients needed to build muscle and fuel your energy. Try to eat a majority of natural, whole foods, and allow yourself to splurge on the junk a small percentage of the time. Make sense??

Just like any new habit, it takes a bit to get used to. AND THAT’S OK! That doesn’t mean give up! The beauty of IIFYM (flexible dieting) is that you knock out the binge moments because you actually are able to have sweet treats, you have a plan you can actually stick to FOR LIFE and you know you’re going to keep hitting your goals because of that scientific FORMULA based off your body.
